About CBBY
The International Board on Books for Young People China section (CBBY) was established in 1990 in Beijing. Its members include over 30 professional children’s book publishers, more than 200 children’s newspapers and magazines, and many well-known children’s book writers in China.
CBBY actively assumes the responsibilities of the China section. The 30th IBBY World Congress on the theme of “Children’s Literature and Social Development” was held in the Macau Special Administrative Region of China on September 20-24, 2006; and on September 26-28 of 2019, CBBY hosted the 4th IBBY Asia Oceania Regional Conference, which was attended by nearly 200 people, including cultural and children’s publishing professionals from 24 countries and regions and members of the IBBY Executive Committee.
CBBY provides services to the “Going Global” initiative of Chinese children’s book publishing. It has organized and applied for international awards such as the Hans Christian Andersen Award and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for many years. In 2016, Cao Wenxuan won the Hans Christian Andersen Award, becoming the first person in China to receive the award.

About IBBY

- The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) is a non-profit organization established in Zurich, Switzerland in 1953. IBBY currently composed of 81 National Sections (about 40 of which are countries along the “Belt and Road”). It is known as the “Little United Nations” and is an international network of people all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together. It represents countries with relatively advanced book publishing experience and successful literacy programs, as well as other countries with only a small number of professionals specializing in publication and promotion of children’s books.
- The IBBY members include children’s literature writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, translators, librarians, university professors, teachers, journalists, and all other professionals dedicated to promoting the creation, publishing, research, distribution and reading of high-quality children’s literature and children’s books.
- IBBY has established the Hans Christian Andersen Awards since 1956. It is the world’s highest honor for children’s literature. In 2016, Chinese writer Cao Wenxuan won the award. In 2018, Chinese illustrator Xiong Liang was shortlisted of five for the Hans Christian Andersen Award for illustrator.

- The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) holds a world congress every two years and five regional conferences (Africa, Europe, Asia Oceania, Latin America and North America) annually. The conferences invite members of IBBY and people from all over the world who participate in the promotion of children’s books and reading to come together, to communicate and connect, exchange ideas, and broaden horizons.
- The 37th IBBY World Congress will be held in Moscow, Russia from 5th to 7th of September, 2020. Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Tatyana Golikova will be the chairman of the conference organizing committee. The theme of the conference is “Great Big World through Children's Books”. Award ceremonies for three important awards, namely, the Hans Christian Andersen Awards, the IBBY-Asahi Reading Promotion Award and the first IBBY-iRead Outstanding Reading Promotor Award, will be held during the time. The Book Exhibition of Hans Christian Andersen Awards will also be held at the same time.
