Following the death of their parents the brothers live with their loving grandmother. All in all their lives are happy ones with Dingng, who is five years older looking after Dangdang. They spend most of the day playing on the outskirts of town though they also help their grandmother to mae ends meet. Because she is a little bit shortsighted, grandmother has tied little bells around their wrist so that she can know that they are safe. But ond day seven-year old Dangdang goes missing in a crowded market. His bell cannot be heard. The following day his older brother sets out in search for him. We earn about his journey during which he comes into contact with all kinds of people kind and good, cruel and intolerant. And we also follow Dangdang on his equally fascinating way through the outside world. In the final volume they find each other once more. The essential humnity, wisdom and charm of the heroes of the story protect them and endear them to us.

Told almost as fable using magic realst elements, this series illuminates the diffculties and possibilites facing Down syndrome children in tlday's China. In turns deeply sad, moving, joyous and ultimately hopeful it is also a very readable and exciting adventure series written by one of China/s most important authors for young people.
